UK Budget pension changes ‘could boost foreign property sales’

March 19, 2014

Excerpt from the news coverage just after the Budget 2014 was announced

Louise Reynolds, Director of overseas property agency Property Venture® says, measures to boost savings and pension funds may encourage more buyers to invest in real estate.

“It is welcome news the Chancellor has overhauled the savings and pensions system. Releasing individuals of the burden to buy an annuity when they have not been competitive for years and have been a bit of a ‘closed shop’ in the way they have been sold, is a breath of fresh air.

“The simplification and rationalising of savings boosts the choices for investors and savers. Blending the ISA categories, whilst raising the savings limit to £15,000 per annum, allowing other savings to accumulate tax-free up to £5,000, competitive Pensioner Bonds and boosting the freedom of Defined Contribution Pensions produce some real choices.

“For those who seek greater returns and still want to break onto the property market, this frees up cash to allow them to invest in bricks and mortar which can deliver even better returns. Given the profile of overseas home buyers is ever shifting to the older age groups, any measures towards alleviating taxation of pensions and savings helps overseas cash buyers.

”Given how difficult it is for First Time Buyers to get on the housing ladder, particularly in the South East of England, it is great that buyers have an alternative way of getting on the housing ladder abroad, where entry level prices can be much lower, but yet still benefit from capital appreciation.”
